Malachite with Dioptase. Malachite is a semi-opaque to translucent or opaque, bright green to very dark blackish green, hydrous copper carbonate with fibrous bandings of lighter and darker shades of vivid green when massive, but it also occurs in mammillated or botryoidal form or as crusts or fibrous, prismatic or needle-like (acicular) crystals in sometimes radiating aggregates, with a strong vitreous, silky or dull lustre, often in association with Azurite; Malachite pseudomorphs after Azurite are common; streak colour light green; hardness 3.5 to 4; Pseudomalachite is a blue-green or very dark blackish green copper hydroxide phosphate, that is easily confused with true Malachite (see Pseudomalachite for more information). Dioptase is a transparent to translucent, deep blue-green or emerald-green, hydrous copper silicate that forms stubby prismatic crystals, which often show rhombohedral terminations, or massive aggregates, with a vitreous lustre; streak colour greenish blue; hardness 5 (Information adopted from " The Crystal Healer's and Mineral Collector's Quickfinder CD" where you can find additional and more detailed information.)
